I completed this light set for a class on design principles, in which we were prompted to create any type of light based on our own chosen aesthetic. I immediately sought inspiration from Stanford's Anderson Collection, a beautiful collection of modern and contemporary American art. I gravitated towards Josef Albers' geometric aesthetic, which brought to mind Donald Judd's minimalist sculptures. From there I sketched out many pages of designs, ultimately landing on a simple combination of steel and a lot of acrylic. With only one week to build these lights, I welded the boxes, inserted the light source (which changes color), and established a distinct arrangement of varying types of acrylic in order to created the desired color, clarity, and depth.
